The Pros and Cons of New Years Resolutions for Children - ALOHA Mind Math

The Pros and Cons of New Year’s Resolutions for Children New Year’s resolutions for children ages 5 to 12, when done well, can be a positive experience. However, if done poorly, they can set up a child to feel disappointed and inadequate, according to mother of three and family therapist Michele Southworth of the Council for Relationships in Philadelphia PA. Unkept New Year’s resolutions can be even more demotivating for kids, than they can be for adults. “New Year’s resolutions are hard enough for adults. Let’s not model for our children the feelings of making a promise to change that, by February 1, they’ve forgotten or failed; let’s not set up our kids to have that experience,” said Ms. Southworth. Resolutions can Help Teach your Children about the Decision-Making Process According to Ms. Southworth, resolutions can be looked at as laying the groundwork to help children learn about the decision-making process and, when achieved, can build confidence for many kids. They can be an opportunity to help children learn how to set realistic goals, and to spearhead a discussion on realistic thinking. Parents and children can have a very fruitful conversation how to go about making choices for yourself, and being responsible for your own success and how having goals can be helpful in life. “Achieving a New Year’s resolution can help children develop a sense of self, and of being a capable person. It can help them learn to make a decision, to evaluate it, and then to make it happen,” Ms. Southworth said. “These are work-related skills that can have a lot of value over time, but they are most effective when there is no parental pressure, and when the goals are realistic and internally-driven,” she added. Two Concerns to Watch for When Setting New Year’s Resolutions with Kids Parents need to guide children in a reality-based discussion that is supportive in helping a child develop the skills to make decisions. “There needs to be a balance between setting realistic, achievable goals and perhaps pushing themselves a bit to reach them, rather than feeling parental pressure to do so,” Ms. Southworh said. Resolutions Need to Come from the Child, not the Parents “One thing to definitely watch for is parents suggesting or setting goals for kids, rather than the child selecting a goal for him or herself,” said Southworth. For example, if a child says, “I don’t know what I should pick as a resolution,” a parent suggesting, “Wouldn’t it be great if your New Year’s resolution was to lose some weight,” is loaded with problems. “Parents should not try and sell their own ideas of a resolution to the kids. Adults need to be very clear whose goal it is,” she added. Externally-motivated resolutions can set up destructive habit patterns of pleasing others at the expense of one’s own needs, and a feeling of failure, even though the goal was not something they really wanted. If parents wish the child would pick a resolution like, “I will get my homework done on time,” the parent should really think of making their OWN resolution instead along the lines of, “I find ways to make it easier for my child to get his/her homework do ne on time this year,” and let the child select something of his/her own desires. Resolutions for Children Younger than 10 “Most kids under 10 don’t really have enough of a sense of time or managing themselves for resolutionsto really work,” according to Ms. Southworth. To increase the potential for success for children under 10 pick very simple and achievable goals. Recognize that for your child to be successful, parental involvement may be required. With young children, you might think about a one-time goal, or something that can be repeated monthly, rather than a longer, broader goal. One resolution is more than enough for most children. How to Start a Conversation about New Year’s Resolutions Ms. Southworth suggested a conversation starter such as: with the new year coming up, some people choose to create a New Year’s resolution to help them make changes in the coming year. “Is there anything that you would like to be doing differently this year? Or something you want to learn to do, or to do more of, or less of than you’ve been doing?” The younger the child, the simpler the resolution should be. If the child picks a wildly unreachable goal parents can talk them through the decision process, “Let’s think how complicated or not that goal is what’s going to be involved in your doing that?” Without squashing their enthusiasm, adults can talk through the mechanics asking, How hard will it be to do that?” said Ms. Southworth. You can talk about how aiming very high can help them push their boundaries and achieve more than they thought, but that setting a goal too high can leave them frustrated and disappointed if they end up not achieving it. Resolutions for an Older or more Mature for their Age Child Another thing to discuss with older children is to ask how will the child know if they succeeded, how can they measure how well they did? Again, without adding pressure. Ms. Southworth suggested that giving incentives if they follow through on a resolution is usually not effective. Is the child doing the resolution because of an internal motivation or only for the reward? Incentives can also lead to more pressure around the resolution than is good for kids. One of the goals of ALOHA Mind Maths programs is to build confidence in our students. We hope this article helps you decide if New Years resolutions can help build your childs confidence or not, and if so, how to go about it constructively.

Marcus and Xavier Individuals in their own right, but on the same path towards learning success

Marcus and Xavier Individuals in their own right, but on the same path towards learning success Marcus and Xavier: Individuals in their own right, but on the same path towards learning success Marcus and Xavier are seven year old twin brothers who light up their local Kumon Math Reading Center with their wit and charm. Marcus gave his Kumon Instructor a chuckle when he told her he was too tired to get his Kumon homework 100 percent correct. Xavier is good humored and studious. Their individuality complements each other as it gives rise to them both meeting their learning goals. In the first grade, reading wasn’t as enjoyable an experience for Marcus as it was for Xavier. In school, Marcus was required to attend tutoring instead of gym class, leaving him feeling frustrated and in the shadow of his brother, Xavier. At the start of the second grade, their parents enrolled them in the Kumon Reading Program. By the end of the school year, Marcus’ reading and comprehension abilities improved, along with his grades and confidence. Marcus beamed when presented with a Perseverance Award from his school. The siblings are on par with their academic progress and Marcus and Xavier have been honor roll students for the past three marking periods at school. Both Marcus and Xavier also achieved Kumon Advanced Student Honor Roll (ASHR) status in Reading. ASHR is awarded to students working on Kumon assignments that are above their current grade level. The boys picked up such a love for reading and every night they fall asleep with a book, says Christina, their mother. “My husband reads a scary book to them every night, and if he forgets they make sure to remind him.” Their dad, Nando, brings them to the Kumon Center, making sure they are prepared and organized for class. Christina balances their time between academic and recreational activities, knowing when they need a small break from all things academic to engage in other activities. Working closely with their Kumon Instructor, both parents understand Kumon’s independent learning approach and have enjoyed seeing their boys flourish in school. After about a year into the Kumon Reading Program, Marcus and Xavier were enrolled in the Kumon Math Program. Pairing the reading program with the math program builds a solid foundation in their learning abilities. “Marcus and Xavier have become individuals and it’s really cool to observe them grow and advance on their own,” says Ryanne, their Kumon Instructor.   Given their current learning pace, by 6th grade, it’s likely they will be at the Kumon advanced algebra level, working their way up to the factor theorem. “I really can’t wait,” beams their Kumon Instructor. What a support trifecta â€" Marcus and Xavier have each other, their parents and their Kumon Instructor, all cheering them along the road of success. This, of course, makes sense because it means that the best students are helping to raise their profile as prestigious places to study. When enrolling on a Bachelor’s degree in Russia, you can expect to pay around 180,000-200,000 Rubles (the equivalent of approximately £2,200-2,500) per year. This means many universities in Russia now offer a choice between a four-year bachelor’s degree and a five-year specialist degree. Russia’s higher education system was ranked 26th  in the world, in the first edition of the  QS Higher Education System Strength Rankings.Lomonosov Moscow State University  (Lomonosov MSU) is Russia’s highest-ranked institution, topping the table of the  QS EECA University Rankings  for the third year in a row. As We Age, Do We Get More Introverted At Work - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / As We Age, Do We Get More Introverted At Work - Introvert Whisperer As We Age, Do We Get More Introverted At Work? This question arises from what may be a mistaken premise. Many of the signs of an introvert could be misconstrued with “wisdom”. Signs such as enjoying time by yourself, being the last to raise your hand in a group setting, other people often asking your opinion, preferring not to engage with people who are angry or upset, not initiating small talk with salespeople or other casual meetings. These seem like very wise behaviors, and many being the kind that is cultivated by the kind of wisdom that comes with age and experience. And studies have shown that introversion does increase with age (Gutman 1966 and Heron Chown 1967). However, the correlation between age and introversion was shown to be small, though statistically significant. Which means that even if older individuals are more likely to be introverted, it does not necessarily mean that it is a result of their age. This only leads to the argument that it is a growing wisdom rather than necessarily introversion. Thus, we could argue that the indicators of aged wisdom are likely to be mistaken for introversion even if you are not. In fact, there are many aspects of aging that lead to your continued improvement and performance in the workplace. Even with the increased introversion (wisdom). Of the top 10 worries of getting old, physical ability independence was rated as the most common concern by those surveyed. As well as the mental impact of aging and the risk to your finances. With these concerns driving you, it may well fuel your ambition and work ethic. Combine this with a growing sense of introverted wisdom and you can quickly understand why they call them your “golden years.” However, for now, we will use introversion to describe the state of mind as this presents an easy frame of reference to understand the behaviors that are likely to affect your work. With that being said, let us explore the other signs of introversion that may present in an aging individual in the workplace. Understand that there are both positive and negative aspects of being an introvert at work. Introverts are more likely to be antisocial or shy, inattentive, slow or unenthusiastic. On the other hand, introverts think before they speak, they don’t patronize those beneath them and they don’t act rashly. Are you noticing any trends yet? Let us look at these positive and negative aspects of introversion from the context of being an aging employee in an increasingly young workforce. Imagine yourself (you may not have to imagine it) working at a company, perhaps an office. As someone of an older demographic, are the younger employees likely to think you antisocial or shy if you avoid their offer of beer pong? Or to go “clubbing”? Probably! But that seems more like wisdom if you take a step back. If you think before you speak (a rarity these days) and take your time to complete your work properly, are younger employees likely to believe you slow or unenthusiastic? Possibly! Though, that is how work should be done. Do it right the first time, measure twice cut once. And perhaps most obvious of all, as a senior employee, you are likely above some or many others in the hierarchy. With this position of authority, and as an introvert (or wise elder) are you likely to avoid patronizing your subordinates? Of course, because with your well-earned wisdom you can think outside of yourself. You can remember what it was like to be where they are. And you are likely to be free of the bragging and arrogant behavior younger employees who rose quickly often have. It should go without saying now that many of the effects of aging and a growing, wiser mind, may be misconstrued for a growing introversion. As you age this is likely to happen. And especially so in a workplace, where such introversion has both positive and negative aspects. It is with this understanding that you ought to embrace these aspects of yourself. Be slow, but attentive to your work. Think before you speak, because others will not. And reserve your social time for those things that are of true value to you. Either in the workplace or outside of it. Your time is valuable and increasingly so. Turn the negative aspects of introversion into strengths in the workplace. And enhance the strengths that come with your aging wisdom. About the author The article was written by Mila Payton. Mila holds a BSc in International Business. Do You Sing Prevent A Vocal Hemorrhage and Keep Your Voice Healthy

Do You Sing Prevent A Vocal Hemorrhage and Keep Your Voice Healthy Suzy S. Adele fans across the US learned the news this week that her upcoming tour has been canceled, due to a vocal cord hemorrhage. Whether you sing as a career or just as a hobby, this news is a shocking reminder of how important it is to take care of your voice as a singer. Although it may not seem like it at first, singing is just like a sport â€" it demands warm-up routines, conditioning, and practicing healthy technique. Whether youre a teacher preparing for a gig or a student preparing for an audition, TakeLessons knows the importance of health when it comes to music.   Most already know the usual pointers like avoiding smoking and drinking enough water, but the NY Daily News website also reminded us of some less-obvious pointers: 1. Dont abuse your speaking voice: Most singers have been trained how to sing for many years. They know the vocal posture, the technique, how to relax their voice and get good strength from their breath support. But as soon as they walk offstage, they have poor speaking posture because they dont think about it anymore. They are not trained to speak well; they are trained to sing well. Yet even the most professional singer only sings 1% or less of the time. Poor speaking posture will catch up to you in the end, so maintain good vocal technique even when just speaking. 2. Sing within your vocal range: Everyones instrument is built in a certain way. You have alto saxes, bass saxes and soprano saxes. The same thing goes for singers. If you are asked to sing a song that is out of your natural range you actually have to push a little harder and that can result in strain, especially if you are singing out of your range multiple times a week. Thats a real big strain on your voice because your instrument isnt built to go to that range. There are tons of other resources and tips out there for the full article, check out the NY Daily Times website. Some specialists even suggest avoiding certain things like spicy food and dairy before a performance. Teachers, what other advice do you have? Leave a comment below to join the discussion! All About Stradivarius Violins

All About Stradivarius Violins Stradivarius Instruments and their Amazing Legacy ChaptersThe Stradivari Family: A HistoryWhat Makes Stradivarius Violins So Special?Original Stradivarius Violins: Where are They Now?The Stradivari LegacyRegardless of whether or not you’ve ever picked up a violin or had violin tuition of any kind, the name ‘Stradivarius’ will mean something to you.‘Stradivarius’, the world-famous name given to the string instruments created by one of the finest luthiers in the history of violin making, Antonio Stradivari, represents the genius craftsmanship which is believed to have resulted in the sound of perfection. But what exactly makes Stradivarius violins so remarkable? What is the history of the Stradivari family? Can you still buy an original Stradivarius musical instrument today?Surviving instruments crafted by Antonio Stradivari sell for millions of dollars at auction, however, they are so rare that even if you have this kind of money in your back pocket, the chances of coming across an original 17th or 18th-century Strad are ver y small. There is, however, a number of violin makers who work to recreate certain Stradivarius models as accurately as possible in the hope of bringing the trademark Stradivarius tone back to life once again. Thus, it is possible to buy a violin with a similar sound - but it still won't be a genuine Stradivarius. If you’re interested in the rich history of string instruments and finding out more about why Stradivari pedigree is so prized, our guide is here to tell you all you need to know and Stradivarius violins. Instead, other factors such as the wood from which a violin’s body is carved as well as the varnish, which is often disregarded as a ‘finishing touch’, can change the timbre significantly. No amount of violin tuning can replicate the Stradivarius sound on an inferior instrument. However, Dr. Chitwood’s research did indicate that over time, the distinctive Stradivari design became widely adopted by other master luthiers in the 19th century as they strived to reproduce the Stradivari sound for themselves. So, does this mean that the trend of replicating the Stradivari shape, which is still so prominent, was all for nothing? This finding might debunk the legend of the magic craftsmanship of Antoni Stradivari, but other luthiers also recognised the importance of using certain materials in the construction of their string instruments. So, while the focus on the gen eral shape of the violin may have been unnecessary, the quest to use the exact type of wood used by Stradivari and unlock the Stradivari formula to varnish it was not completely fruitless.Following in the footsteps of Antonio Stradivari and his family has led to a standard shape for the modern violin as well as the production of many high-quality copies which, when the violins are porperly cared for , are on-par with the original Strads according to blind sound tests.Original Stradivarius Violins: Where are They Now?Antoni Stradivari crafted violins in the 17th and 18th centuries â€" that means that the existing original instruments are around 300 years old!But how many instruments did Stradivari make? And how many have survived three centuries? It is believed that during his life, Antonio Stradivari put his stamp on over 1,000 string instruments. These were mainly violins, but his work also included harps, guitars, violas and cellos.Today, around 650 of these instruments bearing the original Stradivarius label are recorded as having survived the past 300-or-so years. So, what happened to the missing 350 instruments?300 years is a long time for anything to survive in pristine condition, and a lot can happen in that amount of time. Many of Stradivari’s creations have been stolen or  lost in accidents such as floods, house fires and even bombings during the world wars.Due to their reputation for being incredibly valuable, very few of them have not been accounted for or recovered. In fact, there is a website dedicated to keeping track of each and every one of the remaining Stradivarius instruments, where visitors can track the whereabouts of each violin, viola and cello.Although a Stradivarius pedigree is seen as priceless, original instruments can fetch eye-watering amounts of money at auction. The highest Stradivarius violin price paid at auction is $16,000,000 (that’s £9.5 million!).There was also an attempt to fetch even more in 2014, when a Stradivari viola was put to auction at Sotheby's with a minimum bid of $45,000,000 ( £27 million), however, the minimum bid was not reached and the viola remains in private hands.Who owns these legendary instruments anyway? Many of Stradivari’s instruments are owned by professional violinists, collectors and aristocrats while some are on display in museums. It is becoming increasingly common for owners of these famed instruments to loan them to professionals for a period of time. For instance, one violin made in 1667 known by the sobriquet ex-Captain Saville is on loan to the famous virtuoso André Rieu, who regularly performs with a symphony orchestra.Keeping the Stradivari sound alive: André Rieu on stage ¦ source: Visualhunt - ~BC~Another of Stradivari’s 1667 works is recorded as being sold to a collector by the name of Francis Aranyi in 1986.So, the violins created by Antonio Stradivari for the art of playing violin music have grown in other types of value as symbols of the rich history of l utherie. The Stradivari LegacyAlthough the original Stradivari and his two luthier sons have long stopped creating string instruments and bows, their legacy lives on in the violins of today. We’ve already seen how the Stradivarius violin shape has been adopted as the standard for modern violins, but did you know that to this day there are still violin makers who strive to exactly replicate these 300-year-old masterpieces?Aside from the companies who mass-produce student violins using the same dimensions of the most famous Strads, there are also many luthiers who seek out the exact materials used by Stradivari in order to make their tributes to the famous craftsman as authentic as possible. In China, master luthier Xue Ping Hue has created a series of replicas of Stradivari’s 1715 Il Cremonese, using only the finest materials in an attempt to create an instrument with the same tonal quality as the original. This limited-edition replica is on the market for £1,999. Fortunately, begi nner violins cost a lot less! So, even modern-day Stradivarius replicas come with a hefty price tag.If you’re a budding violinist or music maestro (conductor or concertmaster), the fascinating story of the Stradivari family and their legendary string instruments is awe-inspiring â€" who knows? Maybe one day you could play a genuine Stradivarius for yourself. Are you looking for violin lessons London or other cities in the UK? Superprof can help!
